Every line in this portrait is cut by hand from paper – the dog’s fur, the curve of their ears, the way they lean into the person beside them. None of it is printed. None of it is generated. It is recreated, line by line, from a photo of a moment that actually happened between a person and their dog.

The two-layer paper technique gives this portrait colour and depth without ink. The front paper is cut away to reveal the back paper in your chosen color – creating a portrait that feels warm, dimensional and completely unlike anything you have seen on a wall before.

Hi, I am Mitesh Patel. I will tell you something about dog portraits that I have learned from making them – the dog’s face is harder to get right than a human face.

Every breed has a completely different structure. The fur creates texture that lines have to suggest, not draw. The eyes of a dog, when done well in line art, have a quality that stops people in front of the portrait and holds them there.

I take more time on dog portraits than any other type. Because the people who order them are people who know their dog’s face better than they know their own. They will notice immediately if something is not right. And they will know immediately when it is.
