A couple portrait is the hardest line art to get right – and the most rewarding when it does.
Two faces. Two expressions. Two sets of features that need to feel like they belong together in the same piece of art. The spacing between the lines has to be consistent across both faces. The depth of shadow has to be balanced. The negative space between them has to feel intentional, not accidental.
This is why most artists avoid couple portraits. Too many things can go wrong. But when it works – and with the right photo, it always does – there is nothing else quite like it.
The two-layer paper technique makes this portrait truly unique. The top layer is cut. The back layer shows through the cuts in your chosen colour. Together they create a portrait that has depth, warmth and colour — without a single drop of ink or a single printed pixel. Everything you see is created by the presence or absence of paper.
People who receive this portrait do not put it in a drawer. They put it on the wall. In their living room. In their bedroom. In the entrance of their new home. Because a couple portrait made by hand is not just a gift – it is a statement about the relationship it represents.
Hi, I am Mitesh Patel. Every couple portrait I make starts with one question – which photo do they look most themselves in?
Not the most formal photo. Not the most posed photo. The one where they are genuinely close to each other. Where the distance between their faces tells the story of how comfortable they are together. That is the photo that makes the best portrait.
I have made couple portraits for newly married couples, for couples celebrating ten years together, for a husband surprising his wife on their anniversary, for a wife who wanted something for their new home that was not just another photograph on the wall. Every single time the reaction is the same – they do not expect it to look this real.
I cut every line myself. I send you a digital preview before I begin cutting. I show you the finished piece before I pack it. And I do not consider the portrait finished until both faces look exactly right — even if that means starting a section again.
This is the portrait you put on the wall of your home and never take down.
